I really appreciate this article and your diligence to find out the truth. I was told there were as many as 14 different breeds in Japan. But I can find nothing in English so far. I am also told there are 7 forms of deer, but only find information about one. Any help would be welcome as far as places I could get more information on the subject.

This is very interesting. Surely the remains of the modern horses can be tested to determine their origins. Why could they not have been imported earlier, brought by or for military use?

Have you seen 'Gardner's Art Through the Ages'?

According to the Encyclopedia of Horse Breeds from the University of Oklahoma press, the Kiso was used for military farming etc but mostly for military. It's theorized that western horses didn't make it to Japan until about the 1500's. That is, of course, according to my research.

Yaschan,

Thank you for your kind words. I'm smack dab in the middle of college midterms so the blog has slowed down considerably. However, I'm glad you find it interesting! If you ever by any chance come across a mention of Yayoi horse bells, please let me know!

Best,
